![]() ![]() Like many demons in the series, Astaroth appears in various real-world occult and religious tomes - a powerful demon believed to be a corruption of the name of the Phoenician goddess Astarte, the equivalent of the Babylonian Ishtar. One interesting take might be to look at the real-world origin of the name. Did Tathamet have a secret eighth head that we just haven’t noticed yet? And yet, we find Astaroth listed alongside Andariel and Duriel in the list of challenges, implying they’re at least as important as those two in the grand scheme of things. It would be kind of strange to conjure up another Great Evil at this point - Tathamet, the second being in Creation and the Prime Evil, is pretty widely noted in lore for having seven heads, and when Anu (the first being in Creation) slew Tathamet, from those heads were birthed the Diablo universe’s Great Evils - Diablo, Baal, Mephisto, Andariel, Duriel, Azmodan, and Belial. Slaying Astaroth rewards the Vain and Victor titles, but it doesn’t really answer the main question: who is Astaroth? But for those who browsed the list of all titles available from challenges, an unfamiliar name might have jumped out at them, right alongside familiar ones like Andariel and Duriel:Ĭhallenge: Slayer of Vanity - Kill Astaroth in Hardcore Mode. From the rebel Archangel Inarius to returning Great Evils like Andariel, lots of angels and demons from Sanctuary’s rich history are popping up left and right.
